How to add English subtitles to your video

We recommend using Kapwing to create English subtitles for free. Here are some tips on how to do this:

  • Go to this page and click 'Upload file' to upload your video.
  • You only need to add subtitles where you are not speaking in English. To create English subtitles, there are two options:
  1. Do it manually. The easiest way to do this is to play around 5 to 8 seconds of speech then stop the video (the space bar can be used for this), and type the English translation. Then click 'Add subtitles' and repeat the above.
  2. You can also try the automated option, however when we tested this, the subtitles were not correct at all. If you wish to try it, click auto-generate, and tick the box to translate from your language to English. You'll certainly need to correct the translations and timings, so you may find it faster to do it manually, as explained above.

When you export the video, select MP4 for the file type.

Note, if you already have a video with subtitles on YouTube, you can download the subtitles and upload them in Kapwing. You'd find the download subtitles button by going to your channel, selecting the video, then clicking the three small dots next to 'edit as text'. When you click this, download subtitles will show as an option:
