How should I deal with inappropriate behaviour?
While incidents of inappropriate behavior during tutoring sessions are rare, we want to ensure that you know how to handle such situations should they arise.
If anything seems off or suspicious about the person (for example the motivation listed on their booking form, or a message they send before the session), please let us know ASAP. Do not have the call if you feel at all uncomfortable - trust your instincts.
If you do decide to have the call, start it with your camera turned off and end the call immediately if you notice anything suspicious or feel unsafe. Your safety is more important than continuing the session.
Another option is to switch your account to only offer paid trial sessions, as all previous incidents have occurred with free trials.
If an incident occurs, please contact us as soon as possible. Please provide us with a brief description of what happened, including the learner's email or name, and any other relevant information.
We will then take swift action to block and ban the individual. We will also check for similar email addresses or IP addresses to try to ensure they cannot continue to harass tutors.
If you have experienced a stressful situation on a call, please remember, you are not alone. We are here to support you and ensure that you can conduct tutoring sessions in a safe and comfortable environment. At the same time, our small team is not trained in counselling, so if you are deeply affected by an incident whilst teaching, we would recommend also contacting an expert who will be better equipped than us to provide counselling.
If you have any concerns or questions, even before a session begins, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
Update November 2024: several female tutors have experienced a pervert flashing either at the start of, or 10 minutes into, a free trial session. We blocked the accounts he created using his IP address, but he may be using a VPN to change the IP address. If you have any concerns about a booking, please let us know. The individual has been using email accounts with 'gmx.com'. He has been reported to the police, who did nothing. Below is a description of the individual received from a tutor:
- Mid-30s, oval and long face, with short, almost shaved, blondish hair.
- British English accent.
- Looked normal, dressed properly.
- Weird camera position - he was using the phone because the framing was vertical, he was seated and he was visible down to the the waist.
